We are a neighbourhood bar and cafe on Mare Street in Hackney. We opened in 2016 and wanted to provide a place where people could have a coffee or spritz in a well designed space with good music and a friendly environment. We are geared towards community and regulars.
We make an effort to be affordable and to not work with big brands in order to remain truly independent. We do however love to collaborate with people and are really proud of the events and exhibitions we’ve curated. Take a look at our stories page to see some of the things that have happened since opening.
We put a lot of thought into designing our little corner and enjoy adding to it when we can. A number of the things in the cafe were either made by us or our friends. While refurbing we turned the downstairs into a casting workshop and made all our tables, the bar - and even our lilac loo splashback. The metalwork was all designed by JA Projects and made by Lucie Naujalis, an amazing woman welder. Kate Hill upholstered our pink seating downstairs, both her children have worked at the bar, and my Mum made our amazing silver curtains. Our plates were made for us by Clara Potaito, we sell a selection of her ceramics and she collaborated with us on our Antepavilion party.
We really think about everything that we do here, it may have taken a year to get a proper loo handle - but I think that our purple glass door knob is the most complimented door knob in town!
We specialise in making classic cocktails and variations on them. Whilst we love exciting flavours, we also hate that feeling of trying to work out if you’re going to like a pricey cocktail that could well taste like lavender hand soap. Instead we concnetrate on good spirits from interesting suppliers, a concise wine, beer and cider list. And yes we have draft beer - phew.
Our food menu is small but perfectly formed, just like our food prep area. It’s been said (not by us!) that the toasties are something special and our short but sweet menu should keep you happy from dawn till dusk with brunch staples and classic European bar snacks.
